Why go to Home Depot, Lowes, True Value or Ace when they will send you to us anyway? Please read the following guide to help us help you find the lamp you need.

All Light Bulbs are known in the lighting industry as “lamps”. This might be a little confusing since we have all grown up calling the light source a “bulb” and the fixture it goes in a “lamp”. But in fact, “bulb” refers to the shape of the light source and the fixture it is in is called a “lamp holder.” It is easy to see how this can be confusing and why we have always called them by the wrong name.

Now that we know that we are looking for a “lamp”, let’s cover a few more terms that you will need to know to successfully find the lamp you are looking for:

Volts: This refers to the “push” of the electricity. You really don’t need to know what this means, only the volts your lamp uses. Most household lamps use 120V or 130V.Most “low voltage” lights like landscape lighting, under counter and furniture “Puck” lights use 12V systems. Flash lights and makeup mirrors can be as low as 1.5V

Watts: This refers to the power you lamp consumes. It is usually marked like 100W, or 50W or even 6W for flash lights.

Amps: This usually only applies to flashlights and makeup mirrors and other very small lamps. Don’t be surprised if you see 3V/0.5A on your miniature lamp.

Base: This is how the lamp attaches to your fixture. For example, your regular household “light bulb” is known as a Standard Base or Edison Base. The little base you see in your chandelier is a Candelabra Base. European fixtures, exit lights, landscape lighting, and fluorescence use completely different bases. There are lots and lots of bases out there. It would be best for you to bring your lamp in to be identified if you are not sure what kind of base you have.

Shape: There are lots and lots of shapes out there as well. From “A” lamps for your plain old “light bulb” to “T” lamps in your showcase, it is hard for the untrained eye to know what shape you lamp is. We recommend for you to bring your lamp in to be identified if you are not sure what kind of shape you have.

Fluorescence: These lamps are a whole different specialty unto themselves. The most common one you will see is a F40T12CW. This is a code that tells us it is a fluorescent 40W Tubular 12/8 of an inch round in cool white. From there you need to know if its base is Instant Start, Rapid Start or High Output. In order to know for sure, it is best to bring us in a sample.

What ever kind of “light bulb” or lamp you have, our specialists have the best chance of having it in stock of anyone in town. So bring in what you need and let our specialists find it for you.
